Newmont Gold Mine Tanami Desert WA

Structural Design

NRM Consultants as structural consultants to Extrin Corrosion Consultants undertook a structural review of the whole Tanami mine Facility, under and overground.  We looked at the whole process infrastructure from a structural perspective providing structural integrity reports for each report location.  We reviewed the primary crusher facility, Leach Tanks, Cyclone towers and gravity towers, ROM, CIP/CIL Leach Tanks et al.

Newmont Tanami – Newmont has fully owned and operated the Tanami mine since 2002. The mine is located in the remote Tanami Desert of Australia. The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. The facility is located 540 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory

NRM Consultants have undertaken many projects for Newmont, both at Tanami and the Boddington mine facility in WA.

Challenge

The challenge was to undertake an extensive structural assessment of the whole facility in accordance with the strict health and safety requirements, particularly around the cyanide tanks.  Access to a certain area of the site was limited due to health and safety provisions.  So structural extrapolation had to be undertaken to assess what could be observed and convert this to what was happening in the for example cyanide tanks.

The weather and the extreme heat were a challenge on this site. Undertaking the inspection during 50-degree heat is certainly a challenge for an engineer not used to those conditions.

Solution

NRM Consultants provided structural documentation in accordance with Extrin Consultants, providing priorities for remediation.  Our solution included the removal of a few minor structures.  It also included additional monitoring for corrosion and additional modelling and monitoring of the CIP leach tanks.  We requested that some additional steel were reinstated as these had been installed to accommodate some operational provisions.  However, the modifications reduced the structural integrity of the structure.

We provide an extensive document fully reporting our observations and recommendations for full incorporation into the report by Extrin Consultants.
